In vibrant Greenville, South Carolina, leaders from 16 southern states are gathering this week. Their mission? To chart the course for powering one of the nation's most rapidly expanding regions.
This crucial conference follows closely on the heels of a recent state report that uncovered a series of mishaps and equipment glitches. These unfortunate events prompted Duke Energy to initiate rolling outages on Christmas Eve in 2022, leaving some South Carolinians in the cold and dark for over 10 hours.
We inquired of Governor Henry McMaster whether Duke Energy's efforts were sufficiently robust to prevent a recurrence of these winter woes. In his response, he stated, "I'm confident they are exerting every effort." Last week, Duke Energy representatives convened with the state's Public Service Commission to address the surging demand for power and unveil their strategy to meet it.
A representative candidly acknowledged that last year's outages were a poignant reminder of the required preparations.

Congressman Jeff Duncan Advocates for Small Modular Reactors: A Game-Changer in U.S. Energy Security

We also had the privilege of speaking with Congressman Jeff Duncan, a representative for the Upstate region in Washington, D.C., who serves on an energy subcommittee. His impassioned words resonated,
"In the United States, we should not be enduring power outages. We possess the capability to generate electricity 24/7, 365 days a year. I'm eager to explore the potential of nuclear power through small modular reactors."
As per the U.S. Department of Energy, these Small Modular Reactors, affectionately known as SMRs, represent streamlined versions of their larger nuclear counterparts. Experts emphasize that SMRs require less time and financial investment for construction and are versatile in terms of geographical placement, operating around the clock.

Small Modular Reactors: Transforming Energy Stability with Duke Energy's Ambitious Plan

In principle, at least, one would anticipate a reduction in blackouts, as these reactors operate continuously, generating electrons,
articulated Dan Brouillette, the 15th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy, who graced the conference with his presence.
Duke Energy has already initiated the paperwork for constructing an SMR in North Carolina. However, per planning documents, it won't be operational for another decade if approved.
Governor McMaster affirmed that the state has called upon Duke and other power companies to take measures to prevent a recurrence of outages. Currently, Duke is diligently working through a confidential corrective plan, which remains undisclosed.
Duke has disclosed that this plan encompasses 101 action items, with 76 already completed.
